Lecturer

Degree: BA, MA, PhD Psychology

Associated research centres and groups: Centre for Technology Enhanced Learning

Current Teaching

Topics that I teach and have taught (and enjoy teaching) include:

* Psychological research methods

* Statistics - see note below

* Cognitive psychology and related topics

* Individual differences: personality and intelligence, including some psychometrics

* Behavioural learning: classical and operant conditioning, observational learning

* History of psychology with some philosphy of science

* Various other topics at an undergraduate level including developmental and social psychology.

Note regarding statistics teaching:

    For the statistics course I have developed 'at home' lectures; these are Powerpoint slides with audio. Students do the lectures at home and we use class time - when I am available to answer questions - for exercises and problem solving. I have uploaded example slideshows. You are welcome to download and use them. If you are interested in seeing more, please email and I'll happily share them.

    --- sign test: sign test(.pptx format), sign test (.ppsm format)

    --- estimating the mean: estimating_the_mean (.pptx), estimating_the_mean (.ppsm)

    --- introduction to one way between groups ANOVA: one_way_BG_ANOVA (.pptx), one_way_BG_ANOVA (.ppsm)

    In addition, I developed some slideshows that do not contain an audio stream but are designed for students to work through on their own. They embed occasional questions to help students assess their understanding. These were originally developed along with software as part of anESRC curriculum development grant(RES-043-25-0007); the software is no longer supported, but the slideshows have been modified to run as a stand-alone tutorial. You are welcome to download and modify these as well.

    --- significance testing intro slides: significance (.ppt), significance (.pps)

    --- reading graphs (not yet available)

    --- correlations (not yet available)

    --- ttest (not yet available)

Research Interests

My research interests include the psychological study of

Learning and remembering, including laboratory and real world experiments, especially with respect to

-- the role of practice and repetition,

-- learning from text,

-- the role of multimedia materials,

-- Maths and science learning, including dyscalculia;

including consideration of how theabove interact withprior knowledge and/or personality characteristics.

Constructive nature of perception, memory and reasoning;

Memory improvement strategies;

Remembering names.
