Criteria for Accreditation for Prior Learning

Postgraduate Diploma/Masters in Adult Literacy, Numeracy & ESOL

Lancaster University is part of the CATS system and the Department of Educational Research is pleased to look at any proposals for Accreditation for Prior Learning (APL) towards their Masters /Diploma in Adult Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL. Please read the following information carefully and if you should decide to submit an application for APL please contact the programme administrator for the appropriate forms. If at any time you wish to speak to somebody about your proposal please do not hesitate to contact us.

What is APL?

The Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS) is a system where participating universities award points for courses that are recognised by other participating universities. CATS points are recognised by Lancaster and APL is a system where you are able to transfer some credit from courses and programmes studied at other participating institutions onto part of the MA ALNE.

What kind of study and how many points can I transfer onto the MA?

All work submitted for APL needs to be at postgraduate level, and needs to be within the area and relevant to Adult Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL, in addition it must have been completed since 1990 or later. The number of points that can be transferred varies depending on a number of factors including the course syllabus and orientation you wish us to accredit. We allow up to a maximum of 20% of the total course to be transferred onto the MA ALNE and 20% onto the postgraduate Diploma in ALNE.

Please note we do not accept APL onto the Certificate in ALNE.

What is the procedure should I decide to apply?

You will need to provide documentation that demonstrates you have completed the course; including the original course completion certificate. Other documentation includes:

  • Course syllabus
  • Course transcripts / materials
  • Assessment criteria
  • Sample of assessed work with feedback

Once we have received all your documentation we will inform you of our initial decision about the course applicability and the cost for the service within one month. A panel including the course director, relevant module tutor and a member of the postgraduate office will then look at the documentation. A decision will be made with regard to the relevance of the course, the number of points to be transferred and if it will be necessary to undertake any additional study and assessment.

At what stage in my study will the APL credit be awarded onto my MA?

Once the decision has been made to award APL onto the Diploma/ Masters you will need to have completed the programme before the award can be activated. Therefore if you withdraw from study you will not be able to carry this credit as part of one individual module.

Does Lancaster University charge for APL?

Yes, there is frequently a great deal of work involved for tutors and administrators with APL and charges will depend on the individual amount of work involved.

Should you have any questions please do contact us and we will be happy to help if we can.
