The Department is not currently recruiting to the MA in Adult Basic Literacy and ESOL. Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: If I complete the PG Certificate, Diploma or MA in ALNE will this exempt me from taking the LLUK (formally FENTO) level 4 and 5 subject specific qualifications. A: No, this is a continuing professional development programme which is designed to build on initial teacher training qualifications. While some of the modules (notably the Language and Linguistics for Teachers; Debates in ESOL Teaching and Research, Approaches to Adult Literacy, and Linking Learning to Literacies Summer School) do cover some of the subject specifications they do not cover them all, and the programme is not endorsed by LLUK. If you would like further information regarding Level 4 and subject specific courses, please refer to the Open College of the North West. Q: What is a blended learning programme? A: "Blended learning" encompasses a range of activities, materials and opportunities to discuss issues face-to-face and through the online forum. Tutor and peer discussion happens through a specifically designed, fully supported, virtual learning environment. Individual contact with members of the programme team is by e-mail or phone and you will be encouraged to visit the campus regularly. Q: How many hours each week would I expected to study? A: This is an important question but a difficult one to answer. Student participation in the modules varies between students. However we advise students to allocate 8 to 10 hours each week for each module. Q: I am only interested in one of the modules; do I have to register for the whole MA? A: The programme is open for participants to take individual modules as free standing; therefore once a student registers onto the programme you are welcome to take as many modules as interest you, there is no obligation to take more that the number you wish. We have found that people come to do one module and enjoy it so much they complete a whole MA. Q: Do I need to have a first degree in English, Mathematics or linguistics? A: The Diploma/Masters are normally open to students with at least an upper second-class degree (non subject specific). We will, however, also consider applications from non-graduates who can show evidence of intellectual achievement in their work as a teacher. To do this your application must be supported by a current piece of writing (for example 1000 words from a piece of writing, 1000 words from your level 4 course work or a report that was written for work) and 2 strong references. Q: Who are the other participants on the programme? A: The strength of a distance/blended learning programme is the variety of experiences people are able to share from across sectors and countries. A wide range of people study on the modules from all parts of the UK. Students come from a diverse backgrounds, private training organisations and the FE sector; level 4 tutors from both HEIs and FE; voluntary and community organisations and the criminal justice sector. Q: What are the time limits for course completion? A: The maximum amount of time to complete the MA is 5 years. However most people complete within 2 & 1/2 years. It is possible to complete the MA in one year full-time. Q: How much does each module and the MA cost. A: Each 20-credit stand alone module currently costs £650 (2009/10) for home/EU students. The overall cost of the Certificate is £1950.00, the Diploma is £3,250 and the Masters Programme is £4,550 for Home/EU students. International students please contact us for current costs. Please note that all fees are subject to an annual increase in-line with Lancaster University policy and UK inflation, unless paid in advance. Q: Would I be eligible for funding? A: Applicants may be sponsored through staff development budgets, accessed through your employer. You may also be eligible for a Career Development Loan.
