ABE05: Debates in ESOL Teaching and Research

Module Aims:

This on-line course introduces Adult Basic Education professionals to basic concepts of action research and evaluation. It offers practical strategies for formulating research problems, designing empirical investigations in their working context and hands-on experience of designing and carrying out one such investigation. The course has an induction day at the beginning, followed by on-line Sessions covering:

Module Syllabus:

  • Learning a language: some universal characteristics
  • "The good language learner"
  • Bilingualism and multilingualism
  • Learning the written language
  • Learning the spoken language

Module Objectives:

At the end of the module participants will be able to:

  • To introduce ESOL professionals to past and current research and theory on adult learning of additional languages
  • To enable ESOL professionals to read and evaluate literature on additional language acquisition
  • To encourage professionals to read research in order to reflect on their practice, and to draw on their professional experience to read research critically
  • To facilitate a productive on-line learning environment

Module Requirements & Assessment:

One 5,000 word report or essay, but with clearly specified parts to include:

  • Report of small case study or classroom experiment on language acquisition carried by the writer. (Relating this experience to the existing research literature).

or

  • Description and critical discussion of literature pertaining to one of the course issues. (Evaluation of the literature should draw on the writer's professional experience)

Course participants must contribute at least 1,000 words to the a-synchronous discussions during the course sessions. These contributions are qualificatory only and will not be assessed, but participants will be encouraged to build on them in their end of course assignment.
