Programme ContentIn Part One (Years One and Two) the modules taken are:Doctoral Programme in Educational Research - Educational Research & Higher Education
For the Higher Education strand the focus must be on Higher Education throughout the taught modules. Doctoral Programme in Educational Research - Teacher Education
Modules A and B run for the whole length of the Part One. Module A is the primary means through which we support the student's acquisition of research skills. It is oriented towards the world of academic research. Module B is oriented towards the professional concerns of the participants. The remaining modules run sequentially, each for around 7 months. All modules are completed by the end of the second year - Part One of the programme. In Part Two (Years three and four) there is only one taught module:
Module C addresses the specific research skills needed by programme members in their Part Two research. It also considers the nature of professional practice in the post-compulsory educational sector and the significance of its character for research approaches. Additionally in Part Two students research and write their thesis (around 45,000). A supervisor or supervisors support them in this and the residentials are increasingly oriented to one-to-one supervision of this research. Progression from Part One to Part Two is dependent upon successful completion of all Part One modules. In addition programme members need to successfully complete the PhD confirmation process by producing a conversion document. This is assessed by a conversion panel and in some cases involves a face-to-face meeting with the candidate to explore their research plans for Part Two. Alternatively candidates may study at MPhil level. See the Programme Timetable. |
