Writers in Education. NAWE has established a Higher Education Network in order to provide information and support for all those teaching or studying on writing courses, prospective students and recent graduates. The NAWE Higher Education Committee has recently published (in draft form) Benchmark Statements that aim to provide useful descriptions of how Creative Writing is taught and researched. Click here to download a pdf version of the Creative Writing Benchmark Statements, and click here for further information on the National Association of Writers in Education (NAWE), which is the one organization supporting the development of creative writing of all genres and in all educational and community settings throughout the UK.
NAWE HE Network Bulletin: the first bulletin of 2011 gives details of three new initiatives:
• The new short story forum Thresholds welcomes contributions throughout the year. More information here about Thresholds.
• Contributions are also invited to the journal Short Fiction in Theory and Practice. More information about Short Fiction.
• Poetry Matters, the ESRC Seminar Series began 11 January 2011. Read more.
Also, the deadline for the next edition of Writing in Education is 14 February. NAWE is particularly keen to receive any contributions relating to their conference in Cheltenham last November, but general submissions are also most welcome.
Creative Writing: Teaching Theory and Pedagogy is aimed at teachers of Creative Writing and those who are in the process of training to become teachers of Creative Writing: “With the rise of pedagogy modules on creative writing degrees, many have begun to question why we teach the way we do; what it is that we deliver in terms of transferable skills; what the body of knowledge within the subject actually is, how the workshop actually works as a space for learning and many other questions. There is a growing interest and accompanying body of literature emerging within Creative Writing as a subject area, which deals with the theoretical issues surrounding the pedagogy of the subject. This debate is on-going in the US, Australia and in the UK.”

The English Subject Centre is part of the Higher Education Academy and supports the teaching of English Literature, English Language and Creative Writing across UK Higher Education. Their website offers a range of activities, information and ideas to help lecturers enhance the student experience.

Ty Newydd is the National Writers' Centre for Wales and since 1990 has attracted writers from all over the world both as tutors and course participants.
