How to Apply for Postgraduate Creative Writing

Creative Writing MA Applications (Campus and Distance)

A first degree is normally a pre-requisite for entry onto the MA course, though this can be in any subject. You will be asked to give details of your academic background, work experience, and an outline of what you hope to achieve on the MA. You will also be asked to supply references.  The application form (see University application procedures below) should be returned with the following:

  • references
  • an authorised copy of your degree transcript
  • a short CV
  • a covering letter
  • a sample of creative work (no more than 12 poems or 20 pages of prose/scriptwriting)

MPhil / PhD Applications

Candidates should be experienced writers, and will usually hold an MA in Creative Writing or other relevant subject and/or publications in book form or in literary magazines and anthologies. Candidates should have an original proposal for research, including research questions (usually up to five) relating to both the creative and critical components of the proposal.

Before applying you should consult the the AHRC research criteria in order to structure your proposal. Guidelines concerning the other elements of the application should be read carefully and can be downloaded here. The application form (see University application procedures below) should be returned online.
