The PhD in English Literature

County CollegeThe MPhil and the PhD are substantial research degrees for well qualified students who have demonstrated their potential for independent study. Students will be required during their first year of study to attend the department's 'Research Methods' seminar on research technique and critical methodology, but they will be assessed entirely on the basis of a research dissertation.

The Department normally admits students in the first instance for the degree of M.Phil.; if their research show good progress they may be transferred to the Ph.D. Part-time students should note that they are also expected to attend the 'Research Methods' seminar during their first year.

For information on applications and finance for PhD students, please see our sections on How to Apply and on Fees and Funding.
