Research Interests

After gaining her B.A. in English Literature from Oxford University, Kate won a scholarship to do her PhD at Harvard University. She held a one-year lectureship at Harvard and then returned to the UK to take a Creative Writing M.A. at Lancaster University, for which she received a Distinction. She has taught literature and writing on both sides of the Atlantic and completed a volunteer teaching stint at a small school in Uganda. She is currently a Teaching Associate in Creative Writing at Lancaster.

Kate's poems and short fiction have been published in a number of magazines and anthologies, including Storyglossia, Momaya Press, The Mammoth Book of Best British Crime Stories (2010 and 2012), Dark Valentine Magazine, Pulp Ink Anthology, Erbacce, Sentinel Literary Quarterly, The Fine Line Short Story Collection, Words on the Street, The Seventh Quarry Magazine, Five Poetry Journal and Bliss. She has been shortlisted for the Asham award and her poetry collection 'Paper Bullets' was a runner up in both the Templar and Ravenglass Press pamphlet competitions. She has just finished her second novel, The Strange Heart of Oona Scollay. Her first novel, Secrets of the Skin, is out on submission with Allan Guthrie at Jenny Brown Associates.

Kate has worked as Researcher for the Radiophonics project, organised Online Prose and Poetry Workshops on Crossing Borders, co-curated the 'Writing Manchester' exhibition at the Manchester Central Library, and worked as Research Associate for the Lancaster/Uganda Friends Writing Project and for the Grassroutes project at Leicester University. She is a member of the Steering Group of the Centre for Transcultural Writing and Research, and is the web designer of transculturalwriting.com.
