Alan Gregory

Part I Tutor, English Literature

Current Teaching

ENGL 100

Research Interests

After studying for a B.A. in English Literature at the University of Salford, Alan completed the MLitt in the Gothic Imagination at the University of Stirling before commencing his Ph.D. at Lancaster in 2009 under the supervision of Dr. Catherine Spooner. Alan's research is primarily concerned with literary representations of violence and masculinity in contemporary Gothic fiction and incorporates an extensive analysis of writers including; Iain Banks, Poppy Z. Brite, Bret Easton Ellis, Thomas Harris, Stephen King, Chuck Palahniuk, Will Self and Irvine Welsh. The "gendered" nature of Alan's thesis also affords him the opportunity to engage with the research of prominent figures within the field of men's studies, including Harry Brod and R. W. Connell, to contextualise the Gothic's presentation of hyperbolised models of violent masculinity. Alan is currently a post-graduate representative for the International Gothic Association.
