Philip Caveney - RLF Fellow for 2011-12

Royal Literary Fund Fellow

Personal website

About Me:

I've been a published author since 1977. When I began, I was writing thrillers for adults, but since 2007, I've been writing for children.

My best-known books are the Sebastian Darke adventures, which relate the tale of a hapless would-be jester and his miserable sidekick, Max. They have been translated into several languages and are read by children all around the world.

I also created the Alec Devlin mysteries, the dark and sometimes terrifying adventures of a fifteen-year-old archaeologist, with a knack for encountering danger and intrigue, wherever he goes. Each book concerns a different ancient civilization.

Most recently, I've embarked on the Movie Maniacs series. Have you ever wanted to be in the movies? Mr Lazarus, the new projectionist at the Paramount Picture Palace has found a way to put you there… quite literally.

How the RLF Fellow can help

I'm a many-times published author with quite a bit of practical experience of writing for an audience. I'm based in the Department of English and Creative Writing, in County Main B92, and I'll be in every Monday during termtime between 10am and 5pm, to help students develop their writing skills. I might not know much about the particular subject you're studying, but whatever it is, I can help you to improve the way you write about it and to avoid many of the common mistakes that will inevitably lose you those all-important marks for essays and dissertations. Here's how it works.

1. You send me a piece of work you feel needs improvement (you can send it before marking). The best method of delivery is to email a Microsoft Word document to me at p.caveney@lancaster.ac.uk Please try to give me a bit of advance warning on this, so I have a chance to look at it before we meet up.

2. You email or phone me (01524 592248) to arrange to see me to discuss the piece in question. The sessions will be half an hour slots, with a break between 1pm and 2pm.

3. I will make suggestions and recommendations, which hopefully you will act upon.

4. You will improve - when you rewrite something it gets better. Fact.

This is a free service which is supplied through the generosity of the Royal Literary Fund and is available to any student who wishes to take advantage of it. I do not provide a proof-reading service, and will not write your essay for you, but I will help you to become a better writer.
