Visiting Research Fellows

Each year the Department of English and Creative Wring offers up to ten places to scholars and postgraduates from overseas who wish to come to Lancaster for a period of time between one week and a year to study and/or write independently rather than for a degree qualification. Those selected hold the title of Visiting Research Fellow and are charged not tuition fees but simply a ‘bench-fee’ which is currently £1000 for a full calendar year, or pro rata for any shorter period.

As well as having the opportunity to discuss their research informally with members of the Department, Fellows enjoy the following benefits:

• full internet access
• full lending rights to the University Library
• access to the Ruskin Library (houses the world’s foremost collection of Ruskin materials)
• the opportunity to sit in on any BA lecture and selected BA and MA seminars

They also have access to all open research events within the Department including:

• our extensive programme of Open Research Seminars, Readings and Guest Lectures
• Professor Terry Eagleton's open seminars and lectures
• Professor Simon Critchley’s ‘religion-literature-politics’ seminars (Lent Term 2012 only)
• the London Review of Books seminars
• Postgraduate Research Students work-in progress seminars (fortnightly)
• our various reading groups (e.g. Contemporary Gothic Fiction; The Long Poem)

Finally, they are welcome to take part in the activities of:

• The Centre for Transcultural Writing and Research
• The Ruskin Research Centre, with its weekly seminars and close ties with Ruskin’s Lakeland house, Brantwood, at Coniston
• The Shakespeare Programme, with its is close ties to the Northern Renaissance Seminar
• The Wordsworth Centre, with its close ties to Wordsworth’s Lakeland home, Dove Cottage, at Grasmere
