MA in European Union Institutions and Policy Making

Please note this programme is not running in 2013-14.

An innovative 12-month Masters Programme offering professional training and a future career in International Relations with a six month internship in Brussels.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of this unique Masters programme is to give students from a variety of backgrounds an academic and professional grounding in the operations of the European Union. As such, it is ideally suited to a graduate who wishes to make a career in international relations with a particular emphasis on Europe. The Programme has the following objectives:

  • to inform students of the recent history and background to the political institutions of the European Union;
  • to familiarise them with the operation of EU institutions and with the processes of policy-making;
  • to develop a working knowledge of EU law and of its practical implications in the running of the Union;
  • to develop an understanding of the relationship between EU, national and regional policy and of the way in which they interact in real life;
  • to provide students with a first-hand insight into the administration of EU affairs and to develop their professional competencies: most notably, the ability to gather and analyse information, negotiate, write and present reports and operate professionally in a multi-cultural environment;
  • to enhance their working knowledge of European languages.

Entry Qualifications

To qualify for admission to this programme, you should normally already have or expect to be awarded a first or high upper second class honours degree or its equivalent. However, applications from students with other relevant qualifications will also be considered.

You do not necessarily have to be a graduate in Languages, but a working knowledge of at least one European language other than English would be beneficial. Candidates from countries outside the European Union should please note that due to Belgian government restrictions, individuals must be aged under 30 at the date of commencement of their internship. EU member state candidates are not affected by this regulation.

The programme is varied and intensive. It caters equally for former students of economics, management, law or social sciences or for graduates in quantitative and purely scientific disciplines. You need to be flexible and ready to tackle subjects with which you may not be familiar. An ability to read statistics will be useful on the placement and for your dissertation.
