Introduction to MPhil & PhD

We warmly welcome any enquiries from appropriately qualified applicants who are keen to register for doctoral research (MPhil/PhD). We normally require you to have an MA or equivalent qualification, however, candidates with a first-class first degree who wish to pursue doctoral research directly will also be considered.
Direct applications are welcomed in any of the areas covered by our staff expertise. You may pursue a topic based entirely within one or several of the five languages - French, German, Italian, Spanish, Catalan - but we are also interested in projects which are comparative or transcultural in the scope of European and Global Studies. In some cases, it is also possible to receive joint supervision by European Languages and Cultures and another department in the university such as History, Linguistics, Politics, Philosophy & Religion, Sociology etc.
Prospective postgraduate students who are undecided about their eventual area of specialism should consider joining one of the thematic interdisciplinary research fields. These are ongoing research programmes to which we are actively recruiting postgraduate students and which correspond to the research interests of our academic staff.
