Research Interests

My thesis titled "Immigration and its Discontents: Social Theory and the Reorganisation of Society" examines the intellectual, legal and popular depiction of immigration and national identity from 1989 to 2004 in southeast Europe. The research locates this reorganisation at the intersection of emotions regarding cultural homogeneity, national superiority and hereditary enemies with the legal framework constructed around the presence, character and rights of the immigrant population. The research draws on the theoretical elaborations of Emile Durkheim, Pierre Bourdieu, Jeffrey Alexander and Gabriel Tarde.

Currently I am conducting research on the new spirit of communication under the title: Share, Comment, Like: Belonging and Exclusion in the Digital Public Sphere. The research examines the current European democratic and economic deficit, the various critiques on the notion of community and democracy in late capitalism and the ways social media users have corresponded to these critiques.
