Undergraduate Prizes

Tom Lawrenson Prize

The prize, established in 1983 by the department of French Studies to commemorate the work of the late Professor T E Lawrenson, the first head of the department, is awarded annually to the undergraduate with the best overall performance in the final examinations for a degree in French Studies or in French Studies and another major subject. It consists of books or book tokens to the value of £50. The prize was first awarded in 1983. In 2005 the terms of the prize were extended to include all single and major students registered within the Department of European Languages and Cultures.

Max Adereth Memorial Prize

The prize, funded from the Max Adereth Memorial Fund, takes the form of a book token to the value of £50 and is awarded annually to the Second Year undergraduate who offers the best all-round performance in single or combined major in French Studies, and who has made a contribution to the cultural and social life of the French studies section. The prize was first awarded in 1991. In 2005 the terms of the prize were extended to include all single and combined major students registered within the Department of European Languages and Culture.s

Lola Maud Dalton Prizes

The prizes result from a benefaction from the estate of the late Miss Alzira Eloise Dalton, of Thurnham Hall, Lancaster, who desired that an annual prize for modern language studies be instituted and called after her sister Lola Maud Dalton. The prizes were first awarded in 1984.

For French Studies. The prize of a value of £50 (to be shared if more than one prize winner) is offered to the undergraduate intending to follow a course in Part II in which French Studies is a major subject, and who obtains the highest overall mark in the Part I examinations in French Studies.

For German Studies. The prize of a value of £50 (to be shared if more than one prize winner) is offered to the undergraduate who obtains the highest overall mark in German Studies in Part I.

For Italian Studies. The prize of a value of £50 (to be shared if more than one prize winner) is offered annually for the outstanding performance in the examination for either Part I course in Italian Studies.

For Spanish Studies. The prize of a value of £50 (to be shared if more than one prize winner) is offered annually for the outstanding performance in the assessment for either Part I course in Spanish Studies.

Swiss Consul-General Prizes

The prizes, established in 1987, and presented by the Consul-General of the Swiss Confederation, consist of books in French, German and Italian. The prizes are awarded to the most deserving student in each of the three languages in the Department of European Languages and Cultures, at either Part I or Part II.

Francesca Gibson Memorial Fund Award

With the help of many generous supporters, the Department of European Languages and Cultures has been able to set up a fund to commemorate Francesca Gibson (1960-1999), who taught in the Italian Section.

Every year the following awards will be assigned:

- a £ 50 Amazon voucher to each of the three ITAL100 students with the best Summer examination results
- a £ 100 Amazon voucher to each of the three ITAL200i/201i students with the best Summer examination results

The Winter People Bursary in European Languages and Cultures

This award was established in 2006 through the generosity of Jonathan Winter, a French Studies alumnus (1987, Lonsdale). The bursary is awarded to the First Year student who is deemed, in the judgement of the department, to have the best academic profile in languages on entering undergraduate study. The student must be a UK resident who is eligible for a statutory bursary and who is enrolled on a Major or Combined Major degree programme in European Languages and Cultures. The bursary is to the value of £2880, paid in four instalments of £720 for each year of enrolment and is in addition to any statutory bursary, Lancaster University or Subject Award which the student may receive.

Andrew Coddington German Studies Award

This award was established in 2010 through the generosity of a European Legal Studies (German) alumnus (1999, Fylde). The award, to the value of £180, is made to a student of German in any year of study who is deemed to be deserving of specific support for his/her degree programme.

Year Abroad Photo Competition

This prize was established in 2010 through the generosity of a European Legal Studies (German) alumnus. The competition is open to all students during their period of residence abroad in their third year of study of a four-year language degree programme. The competition is focused on a theme each year, for 2010-11 this was Exploration and in 2011-12 it was Street Wise. The prize is awarded to the best two deserving entries, judged by the Year Abroad Committee, to the value of £50 and £20 respectively. The prize-winning photos are displayed on our year abroad page.
