Social Activism Teaching and Research Cluster

«Back

Summary: There is an emerging cluster of interest within Sociology around the theme of 'social activism' that involves research on; the environment; health; noborders/anti-racism; anti-globalisation; anti-consumerism. This work explores the changing profiles of 'social movements' in which citizenship takes on a new, mobile form. This new research cluster focuses on the interfaces between academia, NGOs and the realm of traditional politics, between publics and counter-publics. Topics include citizenship, micro-publics; public sociology, political semiotics, resistance, collectivity, networks, localism, grassroots, labour, autonomy, mediation (including political uses of new media), sustainability and alternative futures. Intial aims are to develop new UG and PG teaching in this area as well as host events and become a hub for grant applications.
