Frequently Asked Questions/Glossary

What is a Faculty?

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) is one part of the University (a little like a corporate division) focusing on a connected group of subjects - you can see the subject areas FASS covers by looking at the Departments pages.

What is a Department?

Departments are more focused groups of staff working on connected questions and teaching in similar and/or connected areas - such as Law or English & Creative Writing.

What do we mean by research?

Universities take a wide view of research; sometimes this is divided between pure and applied research. However, the key thing for our external partners is that research is the search for answers to questions. In FASS those questions range across a wide range of subjects from 'how might design influence consumers?' to 'how can conflicts be resolved peacefully?'

Who or what is an Associate Dean?

The Faculty has an overall manager (similar to a divisional Director) with a certain amount of autonomy, called the Dean. The Dean has a small team of Associate Deans each with a specific area of responsibility. You may find you need to talk to one or more of these Associate Deans, but to make it quicker and easier we ask you to contact the Associate Dean for Enterprise, Christopher May who worked in the private sector for many years before becoming an academic and is well placed to help you decide what FASS can help you with.

Why is FASS interested in Enterprise?

The Faculty believes that (especially) in difficult times for the local, regional and national economy there is much knowledge, expertise and skill within the Faculty that would benefit others. We already use this store of knowledge to teach students, but we are aware that in a fast moving economy and society others could likely benefit.

Aren't you just trying to get our money?

Undoubtedly, there is a finance issue involved. However, in many cases working with businesses and other groups we can unlock finance from other sources to reduce or even remove any costs for the benefits we can deliver to you. However, it is also the case that for many or our staff working with external partners can enhance their research and knowledge, meaning that the benefits we may get are not necessarily financial. Most importantly we will not enter into any arrangement where there is not a clear benefit for everyone involved!
