Knowledge Transfer Activities

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is committed to transferring our knowledge and skills to support social, economic and cultural organisations and stakeholders in the North West and beyond.

Departments across the Faculty are working with a range of commercial enterprises, public sector and voluntary organisations, educational providers, the National Health Service and a range of cultural industries.

The following are some examples of current knowledge transfer activities within the Faculty:

ASSURE Evaluation

The Applied Social Science Unit for Research & Evaluation (ASSURE) was established to serve cross-disciplinary research needs as well as provide public and third sector evaluation services. It has the expertise and flexibility to meet a wide range of needs, from the most complex of assessments to smaller programme evaluations with limited resources. ASSURE is available to clients to provide evaluation services for a wide-range of areas, including: youth, social services, policing, education, health, transport, community design and planning and drug services. Centre for Mobilities Research

Research in The Centre for Mobilities Research (CeMoRe), based in Sociology, focuses on the rapid changes in the nature of travel and communications resulting from technological, social and cultural developments in public and private transportation, mobile communications, information storage and retrieval, surveillance systems and 'intelligent environments'. CeMore is currently working on projects with the Department of Transport and the Forestry Commission. More»

Moving Manchester

'The AHRC Moving Manchester project team of researchers and post-graduates has forged links with numerous agencies and community arts organisations in the Greater Manchester area including the Black Arts Alliance, Manchester Central Library and the Arts Council North-West. Postgraduates have actively contributed to the project's research activities. The project has established an innovative bi-lateral relationship with the North-West Arts scene with a legacy (e-catalogue, writers' gallery, publications) which will serve the academic and creative arts communities for years to come. Cumbrian Manorial Records Project

The Cumbrian Manorial Records Project, a joint venture by the History Department, the Cumbria Archives Service and the National Archives, will both contribute to a major enhancement of a scholarly on-line resource and work with the regional community in Cumbria to raise awareness of the importance of manorial records. The project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and responds to a growing public interest in the local past. It aims to raise awareness and encourage public access to an important but currently under-used class of local historical evidence: the records generated by manorial administration. They shed vivid light on past local communities, as manorial courts combined the functions of a local 'parliament', a small claims court and a land registry and their records give rare glimpses of the lives of ordinary men and women, particularly in the 15th to 18th centuries. Crossing Borders

Crossing Borders is an exciting new initiative that uses information technology to link young writers in Africa with experienced mentors in the UK. The project is funded by the British Council in London, designed and managed by the Department of English and Creative Writing at Lancaster University and enabled by a network of British Council offices in Africa. Participants in the project are drawn from Uganda, Kenya, Cameroon, S. Africa, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Ghana and Southern Africa. Our mentors represent a wide range of cultural backgrounds and writing practice, creating a project that is rich in cultural exchange as well as practical strategies for writing development. Crossing Borders is creating a new, international community of writers who communicate through the development of new writing to share their knowledge and experience. More»
