The word 'dyslexia' tends to provoke strong reactions, not the least of these being scepticism about whether it exists or not. In addition, within the dyslexia community there are different constructions of dyslexia, leading to different and sometimes polarised pedagogic approaches designed to meet the needs of dyslexic children. In this seminar I briefly summarise this range of perceptions of dyslexia and then, using Ivanic's Framework of Writing and Learning to Write (Ivanic 2004), look in depth at one dyslexic child's difficulties with writing to show how, through working in the zone of proximal development (Vygotsky 1987), he began to view himself as a writer.
