It's not the real worldDate: 15 March 2006 Time: 3.15 - 4.30 The university is both a physical and a metaphorical space. This paper focuses on the latter, asking what the university stands for in the narratives of a small group of distance learners. These learners are working full-time as practitioners in training and related areas, whilst studying for a professionally-oriented postgraduate degree by distance learning. As distance learners, this group of learners rarely if ever attended the physical spaces of the university whilst studying. So it is interesting to explore how they talk about the university as a metaphorical space. As will be highlighted, the university is often seen as a space that is dichotomous to the space of the practitioner and this paper seeks to explore some of the ambiguous ways in which these learners both reject and seek to become part of the space of the university.
