AGN Seminar - Why is so much research irrelevant?

Why is so much research irrelevant?
An on-going question for science policy is to what extent we should expect researchers to address social problems, as compared with those that they or their discipline have identified as significant. Is 'purity' a measure of excellence in research, or one of social irrelevance? Why is 'basic' research widely seen to be of a higher, more noble order than 'applied' research?
This talk will give a whistle-stop tour of Dr. Scott's doctoral research which highlighted many of the institutional reasons why researchers and research organisations often promise relevance but find it hard to deliver.
