Gendering Medieval Saints: a web of possibilities

Dr Sam Riches, Lancaster University will be speaking on a range of significant medieval saint cults through the lens of gender history, and examine the variety of gender roles mapped onto these exemplary figures. Dr Riches is a late medieval cultural historian with a particular interest in pseudo-historical saints. She has published extensively on the cult of St George, and is currently researching the meanings associated with other saints who encounter monsters. Her work encompasses material relating to the construction of gender roles in late medieval society, and the ways in which the visual iconography and written narratives of saints reflected contemporary understandings of gender.
