Diane Reay The Zombie stalking English Schools: Social Class and Educational InequalityDate: 31 May 2006 Time: 12.15-1.45 pm Diane Reay, Cambridge University The Zombie stalking English Schools: Social Class and Educational Inequality Venue: Institute Advanced Studies All welcome, please let Ann-Marie Houghton know if you hope to attend or wish to send apologies. The aim of this paper is to reclaim social class as a central concern within education not in the traditional sense as a dimension of educational stratification but as a powerful and vital aspect of both learner and wider social identities. A case, drawing on evidence from both the past and the present, is made that social inequalities arising from social class have never been adequately addressed within schooling. The paper then draws on two qualitative research projects to indicate some of the ways in which class is lived in classrooms. Finally, the paper raises concerns about the ability of the educational system to positively address class in the classroom when contemporary initial teacher training rarely engages with social class as a relevant concern within schooling.
