Complexity and the British Authoritarian Tendency: From the European relationship to the NHS

Despite governmental protestations to the contrary, the post-WWII British governmental model has been a strongly centralised and authoritarian one. The latest manifestations of this centralising and authoritarian tendency can easily be found in the "targeting and accountancy culture" in health and education policy and in the more general policy approaches to the EU and Europeanisation and the "war on terror" and its impact on civil liberties.In his talk, Prof. Geyer will provide a general introduction to complexity and some of its core concepts/tools and briefly explore its implications for health policy and the UK-EU relationship. In conclusion, he will argue that complexity does not provide a new "way" (Third, Fourth, Fifth, etc.) for the future, but strips away the underlying "scientific" justification for traditional centralised authoritarian policies.

Robert, who was involved with 'The Centre for Complexity Research' at The University of Liverpool would also like to take this opportunity to discuss some future implications for complexity research at Lancaster University.
