Ethnographies of TechnoscienceDate: 2 June 2006 Time: 09.30-17.30 Venue: Institute of Advanced Studies, Meeting Room 2 This one-day workshop will be held at Lancaster University and hosted by the Centre for Science Studies (CSS) and the Centre for the Social Aspects of Genomics (CESAGen) The aim of the workshop will be to share experiences and think critically about the theory and practice of ethnographies of contemporary technoscience. It aims to be especially useful to those currently involved in ethnographic studies: to think through current issues relating to this methodology; to explore tensions and opportunities arising in the conduct of ethnographies of technoscience; to share new thinking in theory and method in relation to these kinds of ethnographies. Among the issues we will aim to explore are: * Histories of 'the ethnography' * Diversity of contemporary ethnographies of technoscience * Space, time and 'site' within ethnographic repertoires * What/who are ethnographies for? Ethnographies of technoscience as 'useful knowledge' * Ethnographies of technoscience as 'non-useful' knowledge * Ethnography, disciplinarity and interdisciplinarity Participants may want to suggest other framings/issues and are welcome to do so. Papers will be short and designed to prompt discussion. The idea of the workshop is to bring people together to look critically at issues regarding this method of fieldwork and this way of being a researcher. If you would like to offer a short presentation designed to prompt reflection and discussion please get in touch with Matt Kearnes (m.kearnes@lancaster.ac.uk) or Claire Waterton (c.waterton@lancaster.ac.uk) for delegate numbers. ------------------------------------------- Draft Program Registration Form (Please returncompleted registration forms to: r.love@lancaster.ac.uk ).
