CANCELLED - CESAGen seminar - UK press coverage of GM cropsDate: 21 June 2006 Time: 12.00 - 1pm 'Holding the line': The symbolic maintenance of the modernist categories of nation and boundary in the UK press coverage of GM cropsMs Emma Hughes, The Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, Cardiff University Venue: Institute for Advanced Studies Building, Room A08 Abstract: This paper examines print media coverage of the growth and consumption of genetically modified crops in the UK press. It draws on arguments from Beck and Bauman to consider how the GM debate undertakes the discursive regeneration of security, purity, order and certainty through the invocation of the modernist categories of nation and boundary. A combination of in depth textual analysis of national newspaper coverage and interviews with key media sources was used to explore how discourses of nation are promoted by different actors and how the UK press then mediate these different viewpoints according to their own news values and reportage categories. In particular the paper looks at the press's focus on Britain's national boundary, the presentation of Britain as a GM-free and therefore pure country and the ways in which the concepts of purity and national boundaries can be deployed in potentially xenophobic ways.
