Dynamic Systems, Multilingualism and Second Language Development

This year's series of Departmental Lectures opens with a presentation by Kees de Bot of the Department of Applied Linguistics, University of Groningen entitled:

Dynamic systems, multilingualism and second language development.

Friday 27th October, 4.00pm to 5.30pm

In this presentation some basic characteristics of complex, dynamic and adaptive systems will be discussed as they relate to processes of multilingual language use and second language development. It will be argued that dynamic systems theory in its metaphorical form provides a perspective on second language development in which sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic aspects can be integrated. Then the possibilities of modelling second language development will be discussed based on earlier work in first language development. Finally some of the consequences of doing research from this perspective will be discussed.

Kees is Professor of Second Language Pedagogy. For some years he has worked on the psycholinguistics of speech production, and on language and ageing. More recently he has become interested in complex/dynamic systems theory.
