IAS Workshop - Corporations in the Knowledge-Based EconomyDate: 23-24 January 2006 Workshop Objectives and Format This workshop will consider the linkages between corporations and the KBE. Among the leading institutions of late modernity, corporations, especially the very large ones, are centrally involved in the definition and construction of this new economic paradigm. But corporations are clearly not acting alone, and are supported by numerous alliances with other small organisations, many of which are central to the KBE. Therefore there is a direct and clear link between the corporations and the development of the KBE, in that corporations are major producers but more significantly consumers of the services of the KBE, as clients for such things as management consultancy, advertising, financial and other business services. On the other hand there are less direct links in the cultural arena, in that both corporations and the other organisations of the KBE, promote managerialism and consumerism which are key elements of contemporary ideology. Clearly, this is a broad topic which potentially covers many issues, and it may be approached in a number of different ways, including the analysis of inter-organisational structures and relations, new corporate practices and the impact of corporate policy in promoting or retarding social, political and economic change as well as technological innovation.
