Jonathan Tummons, Dept Educational ResearchDate: 29 November 2006 Time: 3.30 pm Department of Educational Research Seminar Title:Communities of Practice and trainee teachers in the learning and skills sector Location: NSSR1 (North Spine Seminar Room1) Abstract: Teacher training in further and adult education is characterised by complexity: trainee teachers, often enrolled on part-time in-service teacher training courses, study for their professional qualifications as they work. During this seminar, I intend to offer a model of analysis of a teacher-training course, delivered on a franchise basis through a network of FE colleges. This uses concepts of learning as situated within communities of practice (Lave & Wenger 91; Wenger 98). In addition, I will explore some of the perceived deficiencies of the community of practice model and, by drawing on my research and recent literature (Lemke 1997; Avis et al 2002; Barton and Tusting 2005), present one way of taking the community of practice concept further, bringing into consideration both formal learning, and pedagogy.
