Educational Research SeminarDate: 21 February 2007 Time: 4.00 pm Department of Educational Research Seminar Title: Bourdieu's approach to structure and agency and its relevance to researching teaching, learning, and assessment in higher education. Speaker: Paul Ashwin Location: IAS MR1 Abstract:In this paper, I argue that although issues of structure and agency are seen as crucial in social theory, they are very little discussed in research into teaching, learning, and assessment (TLA) in higher education . I argue that this lack of discussion leads to a number of weaknesses in research in this area. I then examine the way in which Bourdieu approaches the issue of structure and agency and consider whether this can offer a model that can be applied to research into TLA in higher education.Additional information:All welcome, please notify Ann-Marie Houghton if you are planning to attend.
