CSEC SEMINAR:Uncertain Weather: Science, Anime and the End

As the environmental apocalypse narrative gathers momentum and support, we are witnessing diverse - and also divergent - strategies to forestall the End predicted by the narrative of climate change. Miyazaki's 2001 anime film 'Spirited Away' and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's 2001 'Third Assessment Report' enact the narrative to combat its prophecies.

In this paper (work in progress, part of a PhD research project), I comparatively analyze the definition of the problem of environmental catastrophe, the delimitation and nature of the object of knowledge and how that determines 'appropriate action'. The boundaries thus constructed format uncertainty and enfold assumptions differently, in these cultural and scientific products. Thoroughly ritualized in both cases, the permeability of boundaries reveals a hijacking of nature, away from alternative modes of reflection and action, leading to questions of epistemological validity and paradoxes of reductionist consilience.
