Call for abstracts, special issue of Security DialogueDate: 12 February 2007 Time: 0.00 pm Call for Abstracts Security, Technologies of Risk, and the Political Security Dialogue Special Issue, Volume 39, number 2, June 2008 Edited by: Luis Lobo-Guerrero (Lancaster University, UK), Claudia Aradau (Open University, UK) & Rens van Munster (University of Southern Denmark) While risk has permeated current security practices, from migration to terrorism, from the environment to society, theoretical reflection in International Relations has lagged behind. Moreover, cross-disciplinary work on the concept of risk and practices of risk management, as well as their political implications, has been minimal. As risk is not a uniform concept, it is important to explore different approaches to the emergence and deployment of practices of risk in modernity: sociology (Ulrich Beck, Niklas Luhmann, Anthony Giddens), governmentality (Michel Foucault, François Ewald, Nikolas Rose, Ian Hacking, Robert Castel), criminology (Pat O'Malley, Jonathan Simon, Richard Ericson, Aaron Doyle), political theory (Jean-Pierre Dupuy or other approaches that consider 'catastrophic thinking'). Different approaches to risk are also predicated over different approaches to the meaning of 'the political' and '(in)security' and fleshing out their connections will allow for a better understanding of what the deployment of risk technologies means for citizens, democracy or resistance. We invite papers that explore different conceptualizations of risk, intersections between technologies of risk and security studies, and implications of risk analysis over governance and political imaginaries. Deadline for submission of abstracts (300 words) 12 February 2007. All submissions to sd@prio.no. Contact: Who can attend:
