Literacy Research Centre Seminar Series Tuesday 6 February 2007 (Week 4) 12.50-2.15pm in IAS Meeting Room 2INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDIESLiteracy and Power among Immigrants in Athens: Symbolic capital across domainsZoe Nikoulaidou, Lancaster UniversityA two-week ethnographic research was carried out in the centre of Athens, in order to explore in which cases and for what reasons immigrants in Athens use literacy. Participant observation and a number of qualitative interviews revealed the great variety of literacy practices in the lives of fourteen immigrants. The presentation focuses on the various domains of life in which literacy is used.
