COLLOQUIUM ON NEW DISCOURSES IN CONTEMPORARY CHINA (NDCC)

DATE: 20 - 21 September, 2007, Lancaster University, England

FORMAT:

Day 1: 6 key speakers invited from different parts of China and the West on New Discourses in Contemporary China and representations of contemporary China in the Western media.

Day 2: Hands-on workshop based on texts to be agreed in advance.

AIMS: To share ideas about discourse analysis and critical discourse analysis

To share ideas about new and emerging discourses in all parts of China

To examine Western perceptions in the media of the changing China

This is the SECOND of our NDCC conference series. The first conference was hosted last April by Nankai University and Tianjin University of Commerce, thanks to Professor Zhang Maizeng, his colleagues and students.

The conference is open to anyone to attend and participate, although the speakers will be specially invited for this particular event. If anyone is interested, please write to Prof. Hailong Tian at h.tian@lancaster.ac.uk.

For the hands-on workshop on Day 2, we will invite all conference participants to contribute to analysis and discussion. Accordingly, we invite all potential participants to make suggestions for texts that reflect new discourses and which could be used potentially at the September colloquium. The conference language will be English, but we wish to include Chinese texts and translations will be provided if you are unable to provide your own English versions.
