:: Special Guest::David Turnbull (Deakin University, Australia)In 1815 William Smith published the first geological map of an entire country. This remarkable map metamorphosed geology into a science through 'the introduction of history itself, particularly of chronological sequencing, as the organizing principle for a taxonomy of diverse and interconnected phenomena'. But what is equally notable is that this birthing of geological science through temporal ordering was effected through a map- a spatial display of underlying relationships.There was, in effect, a double moment of scientism and cartography expressed in Smith's map. 'It changed the world' as Winchester puts it, a map laid the foundations for a science, but just as importantly maps and mapping became dominant tropes for knowledge and its creation.
