Age Effects in Second Language Learning

Robert DeKeyser (University of Maryland) will be giving a lecture in the LAEL Lecture series Language, Mind and Society:

AGE EFFECTS IN SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING: HOW CHANGES IN THE MIND AFFECT LANGUAGE LEARNING IN WAYS IMPORTANT TO SOCIETY.

Tuesday, 26 June, 4.00-5.30pm, Frankland small LT (in Faraday).

Robert was editor of the journal Language Learning for several years. He is very well known for a long history of studies focusing on general cognitive phenomena in SLA.

ABSTRACT:

The issue of age effects in second language learning has become increasingly controversial. In this talk I will argue that a close look at what aspects of language are most sensitive to age effects suggests specific differences in learning mechanisms, which in turn suggest more realistic expectations for what can be expected of learners of different ages as well as specific ways of dealing with political pressures on the language profession.
