IAS Workshop Programme - Open FuturesDate: 15 February 2005 The objective of Open Futures is to understand and explore key social and cultural themes in three areas: work, home, and social. A programme of workshops will lead to a major conference which will take place in November 2005 at Lancaster University. The programme was launched by a Roundtable event on 15 February 2005. This was attended by approximately fifty individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, who spent the day engaging in 'blue sky' exploratory thinking with the aim of establishing broad areas for further thought and research. As a result of the Roundtable, three key groups have been formed around the following areas: Advancing Technology and Communication, Achieving Work / Life Balance, and Understanding Internationalism: Boundaries and Localities. The three strands will be respectively co-ordinated by Professor Michael Hulme, Dr Steve Fleetwood, and Professor John Urry. These groups will meet to take their ideas forward to the concluding conference, Open Futures: Mobile Identities, on 10-11 November 2005. Open Futures is part of the Institute of Advanced Studies at Lancaster University and the membership covers a wide range of academic and commercial expertise. Further information about the programme and outputs as they develop can be found in these pages. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions.
