IAS International Workshop - Transnational High Tech Strategies in a Globalized WorldDate: 19-20 July 2003 Time: as shown The Institute of Advanced Studies hosted its first international workshop in July 2003 in the beautiful Cumbrian town of Kirkby Lonsdale. Its focus was on the nature and dynamics of transnational strategies in high tech industries and knowledge-intensive business services in a globalizing world. The chief motivation for the workshop was to challenge simplistic ideas about the globalization of technologies and economies and to explore the complex relations between different scales of technological, economic, legal, political, and socio-cultural relations. Rejecting accounts organized largely in terms of national-international or local-global relations, the participants grappled with the theoretical and empirical challenges involved in rethinking the complex, often tangled, multiscalar nature of transnational strategies. The workshop built on long-standing links between Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Professor Bob Jessop (Director of the IAS) and Dr Ngai-Ling Sum (Politics and International Relations). The majority of the funding came from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, courtesy of Professors Erik Baark and Alvin So (Division of Social Sciences) with additional support for the costs of inviting overseas speakers from the British Academy and Lancaster's Faculty of Social Sciences. It is expected that revised versions of the papers will be edited to produce an original and coherent book on transnational strategies. Download a full report of the event Contact: Who can attend:
