LRDG seminar: The discourses of a virtual island: the Schome-NAGTY 'Teen Second Life' project. Julia Gillen, Lancaster UniversityDate: 16 October 2007 Time: 1.00 - 2.00 pm This presentation will introduce my investigations into the discourses within and around a Teen Second Life educational pilot. I will explain the nature of the 'virtual world' of Second Life and the Schome (not school, not home) project based at the Open University. On the one hand, there are discourses with strong claims for the benefits of such educational opportunities and, on the other, concerns about dangers to children's well-being so that Lancashire Local Educational Authority blocked access to the project within their schools. I draw on various kinds of evidence both internal and external to explore the intersections of these dichotomised discourses and discuss some of the creativity and conflict around the island. Everyone welcome Venue: INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDIES, Meeting Room 2 Event website: http://www.literacy.lancs.ac.uk Contact: Who can attend: Anyone
