Distant Suffering, Proper DistanceDate: 29 November 2007 Time: 4.30 - 6.00 pm "Distant Suffering, Proper Distance: Cosmopolitan Aesthetics in Anti-trafficking Films" A talk by Dr Jane Arthurs, Professor of Media and Cultural Studies , UWE, Bristol. This talk will offer a close examination of the textual aesthetics of 'Lilya 4Ever' and 'Sex Traffic' in order to evaluate the degree to which they meet the criteria for a cosmopolitan aesthetics of spectatorship proposed by Lilie Chouliarki (2006) , while recognising the limitations of this approach. "Proper distance" also requires research on how the texts have been circulated and used, and an historical perspective that distances us from the political imperatives of the present moment to consider the mythic, ideological power of "white slavery" narrative motifs. Location: A40 County South A Feminist Media Studies research seminar Contact: Who can attend: Anyone
