Electronic Text Analysis Hands on eventDate: 26 November 2007 Time: 15:00-17:00pm Abstract: This hands-on event is a follow up to the 'Electronic Text Analysis' IAS research training seminar organised by Stephen Pumfrey in June 2007. The original seminar highlighted the possibilities of using linguistic analysis of written texts and transcribed speech in other disciplines such as historical research using Early English Books Online and analysis of contemporary interviews in management research. During the seminar many participants took the opportunity to see live demonstrations of some of the tools used by corpus linguists for language analysis. In this 2-hour session in the Faraday A36 lab, we will have a number of these tools available for use with corpus linguist experts on-hand to answer questions and guide participants through methods such as frequency profiling, concordancing, collocation analysis and key words. Corpus software will include WordSmith, Wmatrix, BNCweb and AntConc. Participants should bring along their own sample data to use in the tools. Since places are limited please contact Paul Rayson (extension 10357; paul@comp.lancs.ac.uk) in advance.
