Guest Lecture: Terttu Nevalainen - 'Class and style? Social and register variation in the transmission of linguistic changes in the past'Date: 28 November 2007 Time: 4.00 pm LANGUAGE - MIND - SOCIETY LECTURE SERIES Terttu Nevalainen University of Helsinki Class and style? Social and register variation in the transmission of linguistic changes in the past 4:00 - 5:30 (tea and biscuits from 3:30)> Wednesday 28 November Cavendish Colloquium Room Abstract My paper is an exercise in historical sociolinguistics. I will discuss some of the ways in which linguistic innovations came to be established as part of Modern English. I will use diachronic corpus evidence to reconstruct their channels of transmission, focusing on the patterns of relations between stylistic and social factors in linguistic variation and change (cf. Eckert & Rickford, eds., 2001). Besides providing information on changes in progress in Early Modern English, my research question will serve to highlight some broader methodological and theoretical issues, including the principles of sampling data for diachronic studies of English. The picture that emerges combines various data sources, and points to their complementary roles in approaching the transmission of linguistic changes from above and from below.
