Guest Lecture: Anne Wichman 'Prosody and Discourse Markers in English'Date: 29 November 2007 Time: 12.00 pm In the next meeting of the Speech Research Group there will be a guest lecture by Professor Anne Wichmann University of Central Lancashire Prosody and Discourse Markers in English Abstract I shall first give a brief overview of some ways in which prosody contributes to meaning in discourse, and then focus on studies of the words 'please', 'sorry' and 'of course'. Using data from ICE GB, I will show that the process of grammaticalisation (or here pragmaticalisation), semantic change from propositional to subjective and intersubjective meaning, is reflected in speech prosody. I will propose that the attenuation of form commonly associated with grammaticalisation is the by-product of loss of prosodic prominence. Date: 29 November 2007 Time: 12pm Place: Bowland B61 ALL WELCOME Event website: http://www.ling.lancs.ac.uk/groups/speech/index.htm Contact: Who can attend: Anyone
