Persistent Ruskin-Aesthetics, Education, Social Theory 1870-1914,

The University of Salford, in association with the Ruskin Centre at Lancaster University, will be holding a colloquium at the University of Lancaster on Friday July 18th and Saturday July 19th 2008. This colloquium will be the third held as part of a three year AHRC funded research project on 'Ruskin, the Cultural Tour and Popular Access' directed by Professors Keith Hanley (Lancaster), Brian Maidment (Salford) and John K. Walton (Leeds Metropolitan) and assisted by the AHRC postdoctoral Research Associate, Rachel Dickinson. The two previous events have focussed on 'Ruskin and the Idea of Influence' (Salford, 2006) and 'Disseminating Ruskin' (Lancaster, 2007), and together they explored the varied ways in which Ruskin and his works made their presence felt in the intellectual life of nineteenth century Britain, Europe and even Japan. Ruskin's role as a polemicist, educator, and theorist of commerce and the teaching of art have been considered, as well as the legacy of collections assembled in his name or by his hand. In this third colloquium the focus will be on the persistence of his ideas and social experiments on into the period when his individual presence had been withdrawn from public scrutiny. We are particularly interested in the continuing social, aesthetic and intellectual influence of his thought, social and commercial practices, and aesthetic ideas in the late Victorian and Edwardian period, and the ways in which his arguments were acknowledged and enacted at this time.

The colloquium will run from Friday lunchtime to Saturday afternoon, and will be linked to a visit to the 'Ruskin's Continental Tours' exhibition (curated by Keith Hanley and Rachel Dickinson) at the Ruskin Library.

The conference will take place in Meeting Room 2, The Conference Centre, Lancaster University.

Registration opens in the Conference Centre at 12.00 on Friday 18th July, with the first session beginning at 13.00.
