Summer School in Critical Discourse Analysis and Social ResearchDate: 30 June - 5 July 2008 Time: 09.30-17.30 daily Summer School in Critical Discourse Analysis and Social Research Institute for Advanced Studies, Lancaster University Call for applications now closed Tutors: Norman Fairclough (Programme Director) - Emeritus Professor and Professorial Fellow of the IAS, Lancaster University Bob Jessop - Professor of Sociology and Director of the IAS, Lancaster University Ngai-Ling Sum - Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations, Lancaster University Ruth Wodak - Professor of Discourse Studies in the Department of Linguistics, Lancaster University The summer school is an interdisciplinary course for doctoral students, post-docs and academic staff at an early stage in their career, who are using critical discourse analysis (CDA) in their social research. The course will introduce two approaches to CDA (those of Fairclough and Wodak) and a version of Cultural Political Economy which incorporates CDA (Jessop and Sum), with examples of their application. It will also offer participants feedback and guidance on their own research. An indicative list of themes likely to be addressed: changes in governance, politics and the state, political-economic transformations, knowledge-based economy and knowledge society, competitiveness, social change associated with the European Union, identity politics (inclusion/exclusion) and migration.
