Sociology Departmental Seminar

The Man Whose Web Expanded: Investigating the Network Dynamics of Manchester's Post-/Punk Music Scene, 1976-1980

This paper charts the formation of the network linking key players in Manchester's punk and post-punk music scene between 1976, when the Sex Pistols first came up from London to play in Manchester, and 1980, when the death of Joy Division's lead singer, Ian Curtis, effectively brought a chapter of the city's musical history to a close. The paper uses techniques of social network analysis to both visualise the network and measure certain of its key properties at different points in its history. The aim of the paper is to identify key mechanisms involved in the process of network formation that is revealed; that is, to find out how and why Man's musical web expanded.

Talks will be followed by drinks and dinner with the speaker - all are welcome to join but please notify the organisers in advance.
