Justice For Disabled People - Applied Social Science Seminar Series

Majid Yar (Keele University) will present a seminar entitled:

Justice For Disabled People: Crime Films On Punishment And The Human Rights Of People With Learning Disabilities

The seminar will take place in MR2, Institute for Advanced Studies

Research evidence shows considerable inequities in the administration of criminal justice and punishment when dealing with persons with learning disabilities. These are exacerbated by wider cultural framings and understandings of intellectual disability and criminality. This paper discusses such cultural constructions through a qualitative analysis of the representation of persons with learning disabilities in popular crime films.

Majid is Senior Lecturer in criminology. His research interests span disciplines, with published work in the areas of social and political theory, continental philosophy, cultural analysis, and philosophy of social science, in addition to criminological work. Majid's recent publications include: Cybercrime and Society (2006); Criminology: The Key Concepts (2008, with Martin O'Brien); 'The 'Chav' Phenomenon: Consumption, Media and the Construction of a New Underclass' (2006, with Keith Hayward).
