Lending Ears to the Visual in Writing

Theoretical discussions and re-focalizations of literacy have advanced in recent years from technology to ethnography to multi-literacies, where a so-called "cultural turn" and its attendant complexities have come to the fore. The ethnographic/ecological stance seems to have made ideologically and culturally sensitive participant observation almost a methodological presupposition. This presentation seeks to focus on aspects of this presupposition which may be more problematic than they seem, especially in the relationship between knowledge, voice, vision and writing in particular cultures and the role of the literacy researcher/theoretician/teacher.
