LRDG seminar: The literacy practices of developing a professional portfolio

In this presentation I discuss the literacy practices of National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) candidates, during the process of developing a professional portfolio. This study is based on a one-year ethnographic research conducted in the Beauty Therapy department of Lancaster and Morecambe College. The analytical framework used draws on aspects of Activity Theory, as an attempt is made to bring it together with the study of literacy as a social practice.

The Beauty Therapy NVQ candidates are required to develop a portfolio wherein they include evidence of prior work knowledge and experience, by answering to pre-fixed performance standards. The evidence takes the form of various forms and booklets along with photographs and personal statements. Work samples and the process of collecting such evidence will be presented and then I will go on to discuss the candidates' opinions and reactions to it. Dealing with such paperwork, as I will suggest, often comes into conflict with the candidates' professional identity.
